Braided Culture

Project type

Editorial / Magazine Publication

Date

March 2021

Location

Chicago, IL, USA

Published in Vertiqlè Magazine (Issue 20, Vol. 02 – March 2021), "Braided Culture" is a monochromatic editorial exploring the deep-rooted symbolism, beauty, and power of braids in Black identity. This visual series captures model Paris Miller through a powerful lens, celebrating both the aesthetics and heritage of braided hairstyles. Through stark contrasts and clean compositions, the shoot evokes themes of ancestral pride, cultural resilience, and self-possession. Shot in both high-key and low-key lighting setups, the photographs reflect duality: light and shadow, vulnerability and strength.
